Introduction



The Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry came into existence at Ranbir Singh Pura, Jammu on 15th December 1995 when it was formally inaugurated by then Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Gen. (Retd.) K.V. Krishna Rao. The fledgling institute became the regional hub of veterinary education under the erstwhile SKUAST and then under SKUAST-Jammu with its establishment on 20th September 1999. Sprawled over an area of 98 acres at Ranbir Singh Pura, the Faculty caters to the welfare of animal wealth and livestock farmers of the Jammu province. Education was initiated by a handful of pioneer and dedicated teachers to teach the first batch of pupils through their graduation programme. On 15th June 2000, the prescribed curriculum endorsed by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) was implemented, together with the sanctioning of minimum recommended teaching posts. By 2001, the firstrecruitment was initiated, which by today has swelled to a total strength of 72 teaching faculty out of the sanctioned 108 posts. Various supporting and ancillary staff posts have been filled to a present strength of 115, out of the sanctioned 164 posts. The institute proudly features a resourceful and diverse scientific workforce coming from nooks and corners of the country from varied and elite organizations. This amalgamated representation has enabled the Faculty to intermingle diverse and liberal ideas through a unified scientific temperament.


Mandate

  • Imparting education in the field of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry in order to create trained human resource for Jammu & Kashmir.

  • Conducting basic and applied research on issues of regional importance in different spheres of Veterinary & Animal Sciences.

  • Extension of technical knowhow to line departments, farmers and other stake holders.

  • Preservation and conservation of natural animal resources.

  • Promotion of awareness for animal welfare.
